The late Peter Dutton OAM will be remembered at the 2012 Ranvet State Pony Club Showjumping Championships on July 7-8th, to be held at the Nyngan Showground in an arena recently named in his honour.
Peter, who passed away in January aged 84, was a former chief instructor and life member of the Pony Club Association of NSW, and was also Chief Instructor of Zone 4 for forty four years. He was a founding member of Nyngan Pony Club and helped build many of the excellent facilities at the showground.
No-one was more excited than he when Nyngan was selected as the venue for the 2012 Pony Club NSW State Showjumping Championship, he was busy making plans for the event when he passed away. He would have enjoyed seeing the many talented young riders from across the state taking part in the event.
Strong competition is expected across all age groups with around 130 competitors competing across all four age groups. Naming rights sponsor Ranvet will be providing show bags for each of the age champions.
Competitors will be travelling from all around the state to the event with a small contingent of interstate competitors also making the trek from Queensland and Victoria.
Zone 4, which encompasses a large area of central west NSW, has produced many successful Showjumpers and Eventers throughout the years. Perhaps the best known is Olympic gold medallist Phillip Dutton (son of Peter and Mary Dutton) who went through the grades at Nyngan Pony Club and attended many State Showjumping events. He is currently preparing to represent the United States at the London Olympic Games.
This year Zone 4 has nominated 31 riders ranging in age from 10 to 17, and competing in all grades.
Zone 4 is hopeful the zone can back up from last year and again be named the most successful zone.
All riders have been out competing across much of NSW to qualify. Zone 4 is one of the biggest zones in NSW, stretching from Mendooran, east of Dubbo to Walgett in the north and Nyngan in the west. It is not unusual for riders to have to travel for over two hours to attend an event in the same zone, and many have also been competing further afield.
Riders to watch this year will include Jock Rice-Ward from Dubbo Pony Club who will be competing in the advanced 13-15 age group. Jock has recently enjoyed an impressive run on the western show circuit and was awarded the inaugural Peter Dutton Memorial prize for the most successful young Showjumper at the Nyngan Show.
Associate rider Elizabeth Hoy will be competing on home turf at Nyngan and will be another one to watch. Elizabeth has won three consecutive PCANSW State Eventing titles and is currently competing on the EA circuit in the CNC One Star classes. Last year she was also selected to travel to Mauritius to represent Australia in a Junior Showjumping competition.
Another Nyngan rider, Pippa Manton, will be competing in the advanced 15-17 year division on the 20-year-old campaigner Gotchya. Pippa has been competing with great success on the open Showjumping circuit over the past two years and was also in the winning Zone 4 team last year.
Zone 4 has nominated a large field of junior riders in the under 13 classes this year. These classes are a great introduction to State Showjumping and many of these younger riders will go on to represent the zone for many years to come.
Nyngan Pony Club has held three State Showjumping events in the past. The Peter Dutton arena is able to be divided into four separate competition arenas so spectators will be afforded a great view of the events without having to walk too far.
The club also has excellent camping and stabling facilities all within easy reach of the main arena.
This year there will be a, “Italian on the Bogan” dinner on Saturday night with various pasta dishes and salad and dessert. There will also be a canteen running all weekend which will include breakfasts. Entry is free and spectators are most welcome.
The next Pony Club NSW State event is the Bombers Australia State Polocrosse Championships which is to be held at Bi-Centennial Park, Camden from the 13-15th July 2012.
The Pony Club NSW State Showjumping Championships are supported by Naming Rights sponsors Ranvet, Sport and Recreation a division of Communities NSW, Mitavite official feed partner, as well as other local sponsors.
