We have had a number of outstanding entries over the last few months, which makes selecting a winner very hard. Congratulations to all clubs who have entered the competition - you all attend very inspiring clubs! We look forward to receiving more exciting entries this month.
Nyngan Pony Club would like to enter for the Club of the Month competition.
In October Nyngan Pony Club was the first club in the state to swap its annual club camp for three days ‘on the road” droving cattle. We had 60 riders taking part and drove the cattle along the stock routes to a property 25km north of Nyngan over three days. Everybody slept out under the stars in swags along the way and enjoyed campfire meals.
The children were taught traditional campdrafting, and also had the opportunity to hone other aspects of their riding such as cross country jumping, opening gates, riding with others, bareback riding and caring for their horses and the cattle in the bush. After each day the horses were watered from creeks and water holes, and their backs washed down with buckets of water. They were yarded, tethered or hobbled overnight and the cattle were placed separately in holding paddocks.
After tending to their horses the riders took part in iron man competitions, whip cracking, campfire singalongs and also helped set up and pack up the camp each day.
The cattle drive was the idea of former club president, Nyngan racehorse trainer Rodney Robb, who supplied 100 head of cattle and was ‘head drover” for the ride. Pony Club NSW provided invaluable assistance in making sure the appropriate safety regulations were met – and the ride went off without a hitch.
The ride was visited by ABC Radio along the way and a story was done for the Western Plains Rural Report and the statewide “Country Hour” Program.
The youngest rider to take part was only three years old (and she rode the entire way) and the oldest camper was Nyngan Pony Club veteran – and life member of Pony Club NSW - Peter Dutton. The ride was an especially good way to entertain the many boy members of our club, and it also took away the emphasis on competition and just allowed the kids to ride.
Nyngan Pony Club is now receiving enquiry from pony club members across the state keen to be involved in a similar project in the future.
Go Nyngan Pony Club!
